There’s no denying we live in a world selling ‘health’ everywhere. But, the truth of it all is what we put in our bodies and what we do with our bodies. One of the things we ‘do’ with our body is place it in a home. So, passionately, why don’t we take that home more seriously? Afterall it’s, without question, the most important purchase(s) we’ll make in our lives. It affects our pocketbook, our health, and our psychology. A growing portion of society is questioning the ill effects of technology and, as such, are limiting their exposure to it in their homes. Some others are going so far as to find places to live without exposure to the increasing wavelengths of communication. And even more are questioning the chemicals we’re building our homes with. While there are ‘gives and takes’ to everything, I can comfortably tell you ‘advancements’ in construction materials, techniques, and technology can be found which make a home healthier and their occupants happier.
Standards
Having worked in both the private and government sectors, one thing I can say about government is they’re slow to adapt or adopt … unless there’s a crisis. Easing…
In some areas I believe our government needs to be more flexible with building standards. One of my pet peeves is how many electrical outlets there are on the walls which never get used. It’s an expense to all and even a health detriment to others. And, in the past 20 years is becoming more and more obsolete.
Tightening…
Let’s not kid ourselves. All throughout life everyone of us has succumbed to some marketing scheme or another. At one time things like lead in paint, radon, certain chemicals, and certain materials were considered safe. But, after health degradation or litigation, have since been legislated. One would think we’ve learned our lesson, but we haven’t. There is already ample evidence against new technologies and materials to legislate, but our Government is stagnant. They need to focus on what’s affecting Americans and not on what’s going to get them in office next.
Housing
Home residential design has been my passions for 50 years. As young as I could remember I was taking notes and doodling designs. More recently, I’ve spent a great deal of time on the ‘health’ and ‘low energy’ aspects of a home. Consequently, you’ll find continuing posts of ‘Quiet Homes’. While the obvious marketing for such a home is ‘health’ related, a sidebar is the incredibly efficient electrical system, construction methodology and very low maintenance.
